The 30-year quest for Italy’s most wanted fugitive came to an end on Monday when anti-mafia police in Italy apprehended Sicilian godfather Matteo Messina Denaro.

Messina Denaro, 60, was a key player in Cosa Nostra, the actual Sicilian crime syndicate that inspired the Godfather films. He was a trigger man who allegedly once boasted he could “load a cemetery” with his victims.

According to special operations commander Pasquale Angelosanto, the mobster was apprehended “within a health center in Palermo, where he had gone for psychological treatment.”

According to the ANSA news agency, he had been in the facility for a year receiving periodic treatment for colon cancer under a false name and did not fight arrest.

Criminology expert Anna Sergi at the University of Essex said Messina Denaro was “the last one, the most resilient one, the ‘purest’ Sicilian mafioso remaining”.
