At least five people are dead and eight are missing after a chemical plant explosion in China, according to official media on Monday.

State broadcaster CCTV stated that the explosion occurred on Sunday afternoon at a plant in Panshan County, northeastern Liaoning province, and that the fire at the building was under control.

Two people were reported deceased, 12 were reported missing, and 34 people were also injured, according to an earlier count.

CCTV earlier in the day released videos and images that showed a cloud of dense smoke and flames rising from the business as well as a number of firefighters standing outside the plant.

According to CCTV, more than 330 firefighters had been sent to put out the fire.

Due to low safety regulations and ineffective enforcement, industrial accidents are frequent in China.

In December, a gold mine in the Xinjiang area of northwest China caved in, trapping 18 people underground.

The previous month, a factory fire in the nation’s center claimed the lives of 38 individuals.
