Firefighters reported that 19 people were murdered on Monday, eight days after 40 people were killed in a collision involving two buses in northern Senegal.

According to experts, inadequate roads, outdated cars, and driver error are the main causes of Senegal’s frequent traffic accidents.

After two buses collided early on January 8 in the central region of Kaffrine, causing 40 fatalities and more than 100 injuries, Senegal was forced into three days of mourning.

In response, the government unveiled nearly two dozen measures, including a 90 km/h (56 mph) speed limit for buses and trucks, a ban on night buses, and a prohibition on the importation of old tires, which were thought to be the accident’s contributing factor.

However, bus firms are fighting back and were successful in getting a one-year postponement of the intended restriction on carrying luggage on roof racks in order to keep vehicles from becoming unbalanced.
